'Winter Wander' is a handmade six layer reduction linocut print of a fox in snow.
Printed onto acid free 145gsm Zerkall paper, with Cranfield Caligo safe wash oil-based ink. Signed and numbered on the front. This is a limited edition of 11 prints.
This print started out as a pencil drawing in my sketchbook, which was further refined as I traced the image, and transferred it to the lino. The red colour on the lino is due to it being stained with watered down acrylic paint (before transferring the image) to help the carved areas to stand out more.
I used my Pfeil tools (pictured below) to carve out the design. Having been doing wood engraving recently, I wanted to try to use the lino for some bolder mark making. Having said that I was still drawn to detail for the fur, but feel this contrasts nicely with the bold blocks of the snow.
Being a reduction print meant that only a limited number could be printed, as each layer is destroyed as the next is carved. I work from the lightest to the darkest colours, so started out with the pale blue of the snow and ended with the almost black (it's actually a very, very dark brown) of the nose and feet.
This print was printed on my Gunning Etching press - you can see it coming off the press in the video below.
