'Warty Toad'

toad linocut print

'Warty Toad' is a reduction linocut, printed onto 145gsm Zerkall paper. Toads are one of my favourite animals (you can see me with one on the 'About' page) so expect a few more toad prints to be coming soon!

One thing I particularly like about this print is the organic background shape - something I must remember to do more of.

Like many of my prints the first stage in creating this print was to draw out the design. Once happy with the drawing I transfer it on to the lino using the 'carbon transfer method' whereby I trace over the image in pencil and then turn this over and rub the back (either with a pencil or 'bone folder') to transfer the graphite to the lino surface. I then trace this with a permanent fine liner to make the lines clearer.

This is an example of a 'reduction' print, meaning that more of the lino is carved away for each successive layer of ink. This means there is no going back if a mistake is made!

You can see the print at a mid-point below, before the final two layers of ink have been added.
