'Sleeping Cat'

'Sleeping Cat' comes in two versions, the first is a five layer reduction linocut print while the second is a two plate print with deliberate slight misalignment between the background colours and foreground cat, printed onto 145gsm Zerkall paper.
Like most of my prints the first stage was to draw out the initial design. This print is based on a photograph of one of my cats - 'Huxley'.
Once happy with the drawing its time to transfer it on to the lino. I use the 'carbon transfer method' whereby I trace over the image in pencil and then turn this over and rub the back (either with a pencil or 'bone folder') to transfer the graphite to the lino surface. I then trace this with a permanent fine liner to make the lines clearer.

There was a lot of fine carving for this print to get the fur texture. I use Pfiel carving tools as I love the way these feel in my hand and it's possible to get some great detail.

And here is the finished print. Printed on 145gsm Zerkall paper with Cranfield Caligo safe wash oil-based ink.
Two version were printed - the first is a reduction print, while the second is a two plate print with deliberate slight misalignment between the background colours and foreground cat.
This is a limited edition of just 7 prints for the reduction version and 8 for the two plate version.
Paper size: 38 x 26.5cm.
