'Inner Worlds'

dolphin skeleton reduction print

'Inner Worlds' is a linocut print of a dolphin and her unborn calf, printed both as a two colour reduction print onto 145gsm Zerkall paper, as well as a single colour version onto 60gsm Nepalese Lokta paper, both using Cranfield Caligo safe wash oil-based ink.

Like most of my prints the first stage was to draw out the basic design in my sketchbook. This particular design took a considerable amount of research to ensure the anatomy was correct! I then transferred the outline to my lino (stained blue with watered down acrylic paint) where I went over it in permanent pen. As I was unsure of the exact design in terms of colour use, I decided to work this out using the Procreate app on the ipad before going any further. I took a photograph of the drawing and traced over this in Procreate, using different layers for each colour.

Once the colours were finally planned I was able to start carving. The initial plan was for a two colour reduction print, carving first the areas that would remain white and printing the light blue, then carving out the light blue areas and printing the final layer of dark blue.

I liked the final layer so much however that I decided to also print this on its own as a second version of the print.
